Art Nouveau: The story of the style of Fin de siècle

Mysterious, plastic, contradictory Art Nouveau – famous all over the world – came to Saint Petersburg at the beginning of the twentieth century and presented the city with a great number of splendid highly-decorated buildings full of symbolism. On our stroll through the city centre we will see the most magnificent architectural examples of modernism: banks, insurance companies, corporations – Singer House, House of Faberge, Eliseeff Emporium – which serve to delight your eyes and work for their practical purpose at the same time. We will try to understand why the balmy days of modernism did not last so long, only ten years. And why this Art Nouveau was at odds with architectural ordinariness while also being a sign of a major crisis in our civilization.
